Share Patient’s Past Record, Demand Fair Probe
Shimla, December 26
A recent scuffle between a doctor and a patient at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, has taken a more intense turn. Supporters of the dismissed doctor, Dr. Raghav Narula, have released certain documents on social media, claiming that the patient involved in the incident has a prior criminal record.
According to groups of doctors, a case of assault and criminal intimidation was registered against the concerned patient, Arjun Singh, at Kupvi Police Station in June 2025 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Supporters argue that portraying the patient only as a victim is misleading. They claim the patient’s past record indicates a violent tendency, which supports the doctor’s claim of acting in self-defense.
The Resident Doctors’ Association alleged that the dismissal was based on a selectively edited video that went viral online, leading to one-sided and harsh action against Dr. Narula. The association said that any form of violence in hospitals is unacceptable, but the inquiry must be fair and impartial.Targeting only the doctor while ignoring the patient’s conduct and that of his attendants, they said, is against the principles of justice.
It is noteworthy that the Himachal government terminated Dr. Narula’s services on December 24 after a preliminary inquiry. Meanwhile, neither the government nor the hospital administration has officially commented on the viral old FIR. Police have stated that both cases are being investigated independently.
This development has sparked anger among doctors across the state, who are calling the matter one of workplace safety and fair investigation.
