Chandigarh, January 11

The Punjab Government is set to host the traditional “Ghora Mandi” cattle and horse fair at Sri Muktsar Sahib on the occasion of Maghi, underscoring its commitment to preserving cultural traditions and bolstering the livestock economy.

Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian announced that the event will showcase Punjab’s rich rural heritage through high-end horse breeds like Marwari and Nukra, rare cattle species, other livestock, and best animal husbandry practices. A sprawling 70-acre site at the Industrial Focal Point, Lambi Dhab, Sri Muktsar Sahib, has been selected, drawing breeders, traders, and enthusiasts from across the region.

“The Ghora Mandi is not just a market. It is a part of our soul,” Khudian said, emphasizing the Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government’s focus on livestock welfare as the backbone of the rural economy. A dedicated temporary veterinary dispensary has been established at the fairground, supported by a 40-member team led by Deputy Director Animal Husbandry Dr. Gurdit Singh. This team will offer round-the-clock treatment and maintain strict surveillance to prevent disease outbreaks.

Khuudian highlighted the event’s popularity, noting an enthusiastic response with farmers already arriving. “We are expecting thousands of animals at this famous market, making it a true testament to Punjab’s thriving livestock sector,” he added.

The Minister urged farmers to bring only healthy animals. “The health of our livestock is paramount. If any livestock farmer notices symptoms of illness in their animal, they must first contact their local veterinary facility for guidance before travelling.”

Principal Secretary Animal Husbandry Mr. Rahul Bhandari described the fair as a landmark event to boost the rural economy, foster trade, and provide a cherished cultural experience.
