Main Suspect in Panjab University Shooting Detained After Armed Confrontation

CHANDIGARH, India — A joint task force on Thursday apprehended the primary suspect in the recent shooting of a student leader at Panjab University following a brief exchange of fire in Fatehgarh Sahib.

The suspect, identified as Jaspreet Singh, also known as “Jas,” was intercepted on the Amloh–Patran road by the Punjab Police Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) and Chandigarh Police. Singh is alleged to be a key operative of the Doni Bal/Bambiha criminal group.

“The attack was carried out at the behest of this group,” Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said in a statement, noting that the investigation is now focused on identifying further domestic and international links.

The Confrontation and Recovery

According to Additional Director General of Police Promod Ban, the suspect opened fire on the police team during the interception.

  • Casualties: Singh sustained injuries during the retaliatory fire and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. No police personnel were reported injured.
  • Evidence Seized: Authorities recovered a .32 bore country-made pistol, magazines, two live cartridges, and four spent shells from the scene.
  • Background: The operation follows the shooting of student leader Jashanpreet Singh Jawanda. Dedicated teams had been tracking the suspect across Chandigarh and Fatehgarh Sahib since the incident.

The apprehension has been formalized under multiple sections of the new penal code to address the assault on the student leader and the subsequent confrontation with law enforcement.
