CHANDIGARH/JALANDHAR, Feb 6 — Punjab’s top police official visited the city of Jalandhar on Friday to oversee the investigation into the fatal shooting of Lucky Oberoi, a local Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) functionary murder case, an incident that has triggered a high-level security response across the state.
Satwinderpal Singh, popularly known as Lucky Oberoi, was gunned down on Friday morning in the parking lot of the Gurudwara Singh Sabha in Jalandhar’s Model Town. Witnesses and preliminary police reports indicate that two unidentified assailants, dressed in black hoodies, opened fire on Singh as he was leaving the shrine before fleeing the scene on a white motor scooter.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, who conducted a firsthand assessment of the crime scene, stated that the investigation is being prioritized at the highest level of the state government.
“Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is personally monitoring the developments in this case,” Yadav told reporters. “We are conducting a scientific and professional probe to ensure the perpetrators receive exemplary punishment.”
Police have registered a formal case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder and criminal conspiracy, alongside charges under the Arms Act.
To track the suspects, investigators have begun a massive technical sweep, including the collection of mobile tower dumps to identify active devices in the vicinity at the time of the shooting. Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur confirmed that multiple teams are currently analyzing CCTV footage to trace the escape route of the white scooter used in the attack.
The brazen daylight killing of a ruling party member has put local law enforcement under intense scrutiny. While the motive remains under investigation, the DGP noted that all potential theories—ranging from personal enmity to political motives—are being explored.
