Mohali, February 6
As the construction of chowks at major road intersections in S.A.S. Nagar by GMADA required the felling of a few trees, the action initiated by GMADA for cutting trees was challenged by some individuals before the Hon’ble Punjab and Haryana High Court through CWP-PIL-392-2025. While hearing the matter, the Hon’ble Court had passed in interim orders directing that, until the next date of hearing, no tree cutting would be carried out anywhere in Mohali or Punjab without the prior permission of the Court.
The stay imposed on tree cutting has now been lifted by the Hon’ble Court through an order dated February 3, 2026. With this, the way has been cleared for the construction of chowks in the city. The Hon’ble Court’s decision will make it possible to beautify the city’s roads and improve traffic management effectively.
The court has allowed to remove trees from Sector 62, near YPS Chowk, Sector 67/68/79/80 junction on PR-7 Road and Sohana junction on PR-7 Road, SAS Nagar. Removal is not allowed for the 41 boundary trees (10-20 years old, 20-25 feet tall) or the third side Pipal heritage tree at the Mall site, and no fruit-bearing trees remain there. All permissions include compensatory plantation requirements.
