CHANDIGARH, Feb 8 – The Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has intensified its crackdown on organized crime with the launch of Operation Prahaar-2. This 72-hour intensive drive, part of the broader Gangstran Te Vaar campaign, aims to neutralize criminal networks and apprehend high-profile wanted individuals across the state.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the commencement of Operation Prahaar-2 following a high-level security review. The Gangstran Te Vaar initiative has already yielded significant results, with police reporting the arrest of 5,290 individuals in just the last 20 days.

“Our objective remains a gangster-free Punjab,” DGP Yadav stated. “Under Operation Prahaar-2, senior officers from the police headquarters will personally supervise field operations to ensure maximum impact and accountability.”

Strategic Mobilization and Supervision

As Operation Prahaar-2 takes effect, the state’s security apparatus is pivoting toward high-visibility policing. DGP Yadav has directed Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to maintain a constant presence on the ground. To facilitate the Gangstran Te Vaar mission, non-core personnel are being redeployed to man 24/7 high-tech checkpoints (nakas) and implement city-sealing protocols.

“The Gangstran Te Vaar strategy involves immediate sealing of exit routes following any reported incident,” Yadav added. “We are also intensifying checks on vehicles without registration plates, which are frequently used in criminal activities.”

Parallel War on Narcotics

The administration’s “Yudh Nashian Virudh” (War Against Drugs) continues to run alongside Operation Prahaar-2. Since March 2025, the Gangstran Te Vaar spirit has extended to narcotics enforcement, resulting in:

  • 48,167 arrests related to drug smuggling.
  • 33,779 FIRs registered
  • 649 kg opium, 28,527 kg poppy husk, 48.31 lakh intoxicant pills/capsules
  • Recovery of 2,149 kg of heroin and Rs 15.91 crore in drug money.
  • Seizure of nearly 50 lakh intoxicant pills and capsules.

The Punjab Police have reiterated that Operation Prahaar-2 is a strictly lawful exercise, dismissing rumors of extra-judicial actions. Citizens are encouraged to assist the Gangstran Te Vaar effort by using the Anti-Gangster Helpline (93946-93946) to report suspicious activity anonymously.

With Operation Prahaar-2 scheduled to run through Wednesday, the state remains on high alert as the Gangstran Te Vaar campaign enters its most aggressive phase yet.
