Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art Cancer Care Centre (CCC) at Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College (Dr. RKGMC), Hamirpur, aimed at strengthening cancer diagnosis and treatment facilities in the state.
The Chief Minister said the upcoming centre will function as a State Cancer Institute and will include 11 specialised departments, ensuring comprehensive cancer care at a single location. He said departments such as Medical and Surgical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Nuclear Medicine, Pain Palliation, Paediatric Oncology, Gynaecological Oncology, Onco-Pathology, Radiology Imaging, Critical Care, and Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplantation will be developed to provide advanced treatment options to patients.
Addressing the growing cancer burden, CM Sukhu said Himachal Pradesh has one of the highest cancer incidence rates in the country, after the North-Eastern states. He noted that the situation demands a robust healthcare response, including early screening, prevention, systematic data monitoring and timely referral from primary health centres to tertiary care institutions.
The Chief Minister informed that the proposed institute will be housed in a multi-storey building with a capacity of 264 beds, exclusively dedicated to cancer patients. Key facilities including OPDs, diagnostic laboratories, pharmacy, emergency services, nuclear medicine OPD and registration counters will be set up on the ground floor for smooth patient flow.
He added that the state government will ensure the deployment of qualified doctors, paramedical staff and support personnel to make the institute fully functional. Necessary steps for establishing the centre have already been initiated by the Department of Medical Education.
Highlighting healthcare reforms undertaken by the present government, CM Sukhu said outdated medical equipment across the state is being replaced with modern, high-end machines comparable to national institutions such as AIIMS, with a focus on improving accessibility and quality of treatment.
He said the proposed Cancer Care Centre at Hamirpur will significantly reduce the need for patients to seek treatment outside the state and will play a crucial role in delivering timely, affordable and specialised cancer care to the people of Himachal Pradesh.
