Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla unfurled the National Flag at the historic Ridge, Shimla, on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day, marking the state-level celebrations with grandeur, discipline and patriotic fervour. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Lady Governor Janaki Shukla were present during the ceremony.
After the unfurling of the Tricolour, the Governor inspected the parade and took the salute from an impressive march past led by Additional Superintendent of Police, Shimla, Mehar Panwar, and commanded by Lt. Shashwat Tiwari of 1 J&K Rifles. Contingents from the Indian Army, ITBP, SSB, Punjab Police, Himachal Pradesh Police, Home Guards, Fire Services, Disaster Management, NCC, NSS, Bharat Scouts and Guides, ex-servicemen and other units participated, showcasing unity, discipline and national pride.
On the occasion, the Governor honoured Ritik Chauhan of Gagana village in Chopal tehsil of Shimla district with the Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak for displaying exemplary courage in saving lives.
Colourful tableaux highlighting developmental initiatives and achievements of various government departments drew wide appreciation from the audience. Cultural performances added vibrancy to the celebrations, with artists from the North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala presenting folk dances from Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana and Uttarakhand. The Eklavya Kala Manch of Himachal Pradesh Police staged a powerful street play on the theme of Drug-Free Himachal, focusing on awareness against drug abuse, particularly chitta, while local artists from Hamirpur and Shimla captivated the gathering with their performances.
Later in the day, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and Lady Governor Janaki Shukla hosted the traditional ‘At Home’ reception at Lok Bhavan to mark Republic Day. The event provided an opportunity for interaction among constitutional authorities, public representatives and distinguished citizens.
Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, Judges of the High Court, MLAs, Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Shimla, senior civil, police and military officers, freedom fighters and prominent citizens of the state attended the reception.
The Republic Day celebrations across Shimla reflected the spirit of constitutional values, cultural diversity and collective commitment towards a progressive and inclusive Himachal Pradesh.
