The “War on Gangsters” campaign, being launched on the instructions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has achieved a major success in efforts to track down criminals hiding abroad to evade justice and bring them back to India. Wanted gangster Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam has been detained at the Moldova border, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said today.
It is reported that absconding accused Amritpal Dalam was detained on the request of Punjab Police on the basis of Interpol Red Corner Notice issued in coordination with Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol and other central agencies.
It is noteworthy that on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab Police has recently constituted Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Counter Intelligence Ashish Chaudhary to track criminals hiding abroad and bring them back to Punjab under the legal process.
According to information, Amritpal Singh, alias Amrit Dalam, a resident of Dalam Nangal village in Batala, is associated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang and fled abroad using a fake passport. The accused has been particularly active in extortion activities via phone, targeting prominent figures and businessmen in the Amritsar area.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that Amritpal Singh was wanted in several serious criminal cases including drug trafficking, murder, attempt to murder in Punjab and was absconding for a long time.
He said that continuous international coordination and the relentless action of Punjab police agencies led to the successful capture of Amr Dalam. Legal and diplomatic proceedings are underway for his extradition/deportation process, so that he can be brought to justice as soon as possible.
The DGP said that the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) of Punjab Police is currently working actively to nab various criminals hiding abroad.
