Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann advocates strong civil-military cooperation to deal with security challenges and emergencies
Chandigarh, May 14:
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann today stressed the need for stronger civil-military coordination in Punjab during his meeting with Army Commander Western Command Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, with both sides agreeing to strengthen coordination on border management, internal security, relief operations and operational preparedness in the strategically important border state of Punjab. The meeting, held in Chandigarh, also focused on expediting ongoing projects in the border areas and developing a coordinated framework to address emerging security and other challenges.
During the first meeting between the Army Commander and the Chief Minister since Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh assumed command of the Western Army, a wide range of issues of national importance were discussed in detail. Both sides agreed that the highest priority would be given to the completion of all ongoing projects in the border areas to further enhance operational capabilities and strengthen the national security infrastructure.
Emphasizing the strategic importance of Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “Punjab is a border state with approximately 550 kilometers of international border and hence it is extremely important to further strengthen civil-military cooperation in this area.” He stressed the need to build trust through coordinated policy making and a strong internal security mechanism.
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of developing robust strategies to effectively respond to natural disasters, external threats, and other crises. He said that strong cooperation between the civil administration and the armed forces is essential to protect national interests and ensure prompt response during emergencies.
The meeting also discussed in detail important land acquisition issues related to border management, internal security, youth empowerment, rehabilitation of Agniveers, and operational preparedness. Relief operations, recruitment into the armed forces, and welfare measures, including housing projects for serving military personnel and veterans, were also discussed.
Reiterating the Punjab Government’s commitment to support the Armed Forces, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann assured Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh of the state’s full support to every initiative undertaken by the Indian Army in the service of the nation.
Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, Brigadier Sameer Thakkar, Colonel Jasdeep Sandhu, Advisor on Civil-Military Affairs, Headquarters Western Command and other senior officers were also present during the meeting.
