Dharoh, Kangra | Himachal Pradesh| India, Feb 4 – Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday distributed appointment letters to 1,253 newly recruited police constables and said the state government would hire 800 more within the next two months to strengthen law enforcement and public service delivery.
Speaking at a recruitment event at the Police College in Dharoh in Kangra district, Sukhu said the new recruits would play a key role in the state’s campaign against drug abuse, an issue authorities say poses a growing challenge in the hill state.
The chief minister said the recruitment process was conducted transparently through the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission, departing from previous practices in which the police department conducted examinations. He referred to alleged examination paper leaks during earlier recruitment drives under a previous government, which led to cancellations and protests by job aspirants.
Sukhu said the additional recruitment of constables would further strengthen the police force and improve response capabilities across the state.
Highlighting performance indicators, he said Himachal Pradesh Police ranked first nationally in average response time under India’s Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112). The force has also consistently topped rankings among hill states under the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), while securing a top-five national position under the Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences, he added.
The chief minister said the government was taking steps to improve service conditions for police personnel, including procuring higher-quality uniform fabric and considering an increase in the uniform allowance. He also announced that ex-servicemen serving in the police force would be granted honorary ranks after completing specified years of service.
On the state’s anti-narcotics campaign, Sukhu said police registered 2,149 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2025, nearly 25% more than the previous year. He said disciplinary action had been taken against police personnel found involved in drug-related activities and warned of similar action against government employees in other departments.
Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari said the department continued to focus on modernisation, faster response times and public outreach as part of its crime-prevention strategy.
