475 Warders and 57 Matrons to Be Recruited
Chandigarh, December 24
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema today officially approved the direct recruitment of 532 employees for the Punjab Jail Department to strengthen prison security and improve administrative efficiency.
Under this recruitment drive, 475 Warders and 57 Matrons will be appointed. Giving further detail Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated that these 532 posts will be filled through the Subordinate Services Selection Board (SSSB). He added that this process will run concurrently with the ongoing recruitment of 451 warders and 20 matrons, which is already under process by the board.
Minister further said that the approved recruitment also includes seven warder posts expected to fall vacant due to retirement of employees by December 31, 2026. Finance Minister said that while the Jail Department is already undergoing extensive restructuring, the immediate recruitment of these 532 posts is essential for the department’s smooth functioning. He pointed out that the department is currently facing a shortage of staff, forcing guarding personnel to work in double shifts.
Highlighting the Punjab Government’s commitment, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, to provide necessary staffing for correctional facilities as well as regular employment opportunities for the state’s youth, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the aim of approving this recruitment is to reduce the workload on existing staff and to replace temporary employees with regular appointees.
