Mr Gulab Chand Kataria, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory Chandigarh, conducted a surprise visit to Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32. Shri Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary, UT Chandigarh, accompanied him during the inspection. Mr Kataria first visited the newly established Emergency and Trauma Ward, where he interacted with patients and inquired about the medical facilities and services provided to them.

He then inspected the gynae emergency, labour room, maternity ward and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Emphasizing the need to strengthen maternal healthcare services, he directed hospital authorities to enhance the capacity of the maternity ward. Dr. Thami, Director Principal, GMCH-32, informed that a separate maternity and child health centre is expected to become operational within the next 4–5 months, which will help regulate patient load and ease congestion in the existing ward.
The Administrator also visited the waiting area for patient attendants and inquired about stay facilities. The Director Principal briefed him on the Serai operating within hospital premises, offering accommodation at nominal rates. Visit highlighted commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and patient-centric services in government hospitals.
