World Bank, AIIB Team Review Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Project

Amritsar, April 21

A team from the World Bank and AIIB visited the city to assess the progress of the Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Scheme Project, which has been initiated by the Punjab Government to ensure a continuous supply of clean drinking water to residents.

It is noteworthy that the Municipal Corporation Amritsar is implementing the Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Project with the support of the World Bank and AIIB. Under this project, the ABWSS (Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Scheme) is being executed. The project aims to treat water from the Upper Bari Doab Canal and supply it to households across the city.

As part of the project, a Water Treatment Plant with a capacity of 440 million liters per day is being constructed near Vallah. Additionally, 45 new water storage tanks are being built, and approximately 112 km of pipeline is being laid across the city.

The World Bank team, including Maria Luisa and Charu Jain, and the AIIB team, including Rupal Kulkarni and Eya Cruz, visited the Water Treatment Plant under construction at Vallah along with other project sites to review the progress.

Following the site visit, a review meeting was held with the Municipal Commissioner, Bikramjit Singh Shergill. During the meeting, the Commissioner highlighted that with the onset of summer, special measures have been implemented to protect workers from heat and heatwaves. These include restricting work between 12 PM and 3 PM during extreme heat, providing desert coolers in worker accommodations, and ensuring access to cold drinking water along with ORS.

The World Bank team appreciated the efforts taken to ensure the safety of workers and the general public, as well as the measures implemented to minimize environmental impact in surrounding areas during construction.

On this occasion, SE Project Dr. Jitin Vasudeva, Project Manager Kuldeep Singh Saini (Retired Chief Engineer), XEN Sunil Mahajan, Divtesh Virdi, Narendra Pal Singh, Ashwani Kumar, Badal Soni, Dr. Sumit Arora, and others were also present.
