Free Internet for Government Institutions; DC Reviews Progress
Rohtak, May 5:
In a significant step towards strengthening rural digital infrastructure, the District Administration in Rohtak has accelerated the implementation of the BharatNet project to ensure broadband connectivity across all 147 Gram Panchayats in the district. Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta reviewed the progress of the project and directed officials of BSNL to scale up broadband connections and meet monthly targets for timely completion.
Free Connectivity for Public Institutions
Under the BharatNet initiative, free broadband connections are being provided to key government institutions, including schools, health centres, anganwadi centres, panchayat offices, police posts, and other government establishments. Departments have been asked to submit lists of eligible institutions to facilitate faster rollout.
Targets Set for 2027
The district administration has set a target of providing 1,400 broadband connections by March 2027, of which 600 connections have already been completed. Additionally, at least 10 broadband connections per village are being ensured under the project.
Boost to Digital Services
The BharatNet network is expected to strengthen delivery of e-health, e-education, and e-governance services in rural areas, ensuring access to digital facilities comparable to urban regions.
Opportunities for Rural Youth
Officials informed that the project allows participation of private telecom operators under the BNU model, which is likely to generate employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for rural youth.
Affordable Plans for Citizens
Apart from institutional connections, residents can avail broadband services at affordable rates, with plans ranging from ₹450 to ₹1500 depending on speed and usage.
Focus on Last-Mile Connectivity. Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta said that BharatNet is a key driver of rural digital transformation and emphasized the administration’s focus on ensuring connectivity in every village.
He added that the initiative aims not only to provide internet access but also to bridge the digital divide and create equal opportunities for citizens.
With a structured approach and accelerated execution, Rohtak is steadily progressing towards becoming a fully digitally connected district, setting an example in rural digital transformation.
