Jalandhar, May 10

Rajya Sabha Member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal stated that roads worth ₹835 crore will be constructed in Punjab under Phase III of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. He informed that these roads were originally scheduled to be built last year and tenders had already been issued, but the work was halted due to a sudden letter issued by the Central Government. The restriction has now been lifted.

Instructions have been issued to complete approvals and the tendering process for all roads being built under PMGSY across the country within 72 days. It has also been directed that, under no circumstances, should these works be delayed beyond September 30, 2026.

Sant Seechewal said that according to a letter issued by the Union Ministry of Rural Development, projects worth ₹6,215.23 crore have been approved under PMGSY across 28 states and Union Territories in the country. The letter states that road and bridge construction in plain areas will be completed by March 2028, while road construction in hilly areas must also be completed before March 2028. Bridge construction in hilly regions has been directed to be completed by March 2029.

Sant Seechewal further said that during the previous Budget Session, on March 12, he had raised the issue in Parliament that 64 roads covering approximately 628 kilometers were to be constructed in Punjab under PMGSY. In addition, 38 bridges were also proposed. He added that with the removal of the Central Government’s restriction, the path is now clear for the construction of these roads and bridges.

Seven roads in Jalandhar district are included under the scheme. These include Samrae to Bundhala, Mehatpur Parjian Road to Shahkot via Mandiala, Pandori Bhullar, Shahkot Malshian Road to Parjian Kalan via Gobind Nagar, Dhandowal, Kania Khurd, Lohian Poonian Road to Lohian Makhu Road via Maharajwala Mandi, Nal, Manak, and Rupewal to Talwandi Madho via Raiwal Dona. Sant Seechewal said that roads are truly like lifelines. The construction of these roads changes the destiny and outlook of an area. Therefore, building connectivity roads is extremely necessary and important.
