Sonipat, June 11
The Sonipat Metropolitan Development Authority (SMDA) on Thursday demolished an illegal colony and unauthorized constructions developed on revenue land in Village Sauhati, located within the Additional Controlled Area declared around Kharkhoda.
District Town Planner (DTP) Neelam Sharma said the action was carried out as part of an ongoing campaign launched by the administration under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Neha Singh to curb illegal constructions at the initial stage across the district. According to the DTP, the illegal colony was spread over approximately one acre of land. During the demolition drive, the SMDA team razed a 200-metre-long boundary wall, one DPC structure and kutcha roads constructed within the colony.
Appealing to the public, Neelam Sharma urged people not to purchase plots in unauthorized colonies. She said such colonies do not receive basic government facilities such as roads, water supply, sewerage and electricity, which could put buyers’ hard-earned money at risk. She advised citizens to verify whether a colony has been approved as per regulations before purchasing any plot. Sharma further stated that obtaining permission from the CEO of SMDA is mandatory before undertaking any construction in a controlled area. Otherwise, unauthorized colonies and constructions can be demolished at any time under the provisions of the Controlled Areas Act.
She informed that citizens seeking information regarding approved colonies or construction permissions may contact the Sonipat Metropolitan Development Authority office located on the fourth floor of the Taxation Department building in Sector-12, Sonipat. The demolition operation was carried out in the presence of Duty Magistrate and SMDA Executive Engineer Amit Kaushik, along with the SMDA enforcement team and police personnel.
