Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta has called upon government and private colleges to go beyond awarding degrees and focus on the holistic personality development of students. He stressed that higher education institutions should prepare students not only for careers but also for life by fostering confidence, practical skills, and competitive readiness.
Chairing the monthly review meeting of the higher education department at the Mini Secretariat on Thursday, Gupta directed all colleges in the district to prepare comprehensive annual activity plans outlining academic, co-curricular, and personality development initiatives for students of different classes. “Education should be career-oriented and capable of building self-confidence among students,” he said, emphasizing the need for institutions to align their teaching and training methods with the evolving demands of the job market.
Highlighting the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Deputy Commissioner said that a 120-hour internship has been made mandatory for undergraduate students. He directed that all district departments be informed so that internship opportunities can be created for students in government offices and institutions.
Gupta said internships, fieldwork and community engagement are essential components of undergraduate education under the NEP. In collaboration with the district administration, colleges will facilitate structured and supervised internships in various district-level offices. The initiative aims to provide students with practical work experience, expose them to administrative functioning, and strengthen their understanding of governance while also supporting district offices.
The Deputy Commissioner also urged colleges to prepare students for competitive examinations alongside their regular academic studies. He advised institutions to guide students according to their interests and aptitude for Civil Services and other government recruitment examinations. He further encouraged faculty members to familiarize themselves with the syllabi and requirements of various competitive exams so they can effectively mentor and support students in their preparation.
The meeting was attended by Assistant Commissioner (Trainee) Vishal Singh, Chief Minister’s Good Governance Associate Tanumay Dutta, principals and representatives of government and private colleges across the district. Among those present were Dr. Param Bhushan Arya, Principal of Government College Sampla; Meenu Nain, Principal of Sakshi Malik Government College; Prof. Sanjay Gupta, Principal of Vaish College; and Assistant Professor Subhash Balhara from Government Women’s Postgraduate College, along with representatives from other educational institutions.
