CS Inspects Gaushalas Amid Recent Cow Deaths

In the wake of several cow deaths at the Raipur Kalan gaushala, H. Rajesh Prasad, IAS, Chief Secretary of UT Chandigarh, conducted a thorough inspection today of gaushalas at Raipur Kalan, two in Industrial Area, the incinerator, and the Animal Birth Control Centre.

The visit aimed to review facilities for cattle and dog welfare, including shelter, cleanliness, fodder, water, veterinary care, waste management and maintenance.

He interacted with the officers and staff deployed at the gaushalas and issued specific directions to further strengthen monitoring and transparency in their functioning.

H. Rajesh Prasad stated that approximately 1,000 cows are currently housed in the Chandigarh gaushalas and that all essential facilities for their proper living, feeding and drinking have been ensured. He instructed that separate display boards be installed indicating the daily availability and consumption of green fodder and dry fodder, so as to maintain transparency and enable regular monitoring.

The incinerator at Raipur Kalan had been non-functional due to a technical issue but is being repaired promptly.

To boost accountability, he ordered display boards at each gaushala showing manpower details, duty rosters and daily fodder consumption. CCTV surveillance must be strictly enforced and reviewed, premises kept clean, uneven areas levelled for drainage, and hygiene maintained.

Clear directions were issued to maintain the gaushalas in a neat and clean condition at all times. Additionally, he directed that uneven areas within the gaushala premises shall be properly levelled, keeping in view appropriate slope angles to facilitate proper drainage and maintain hygiene and cleanliness across the premises.

Accompanying the Chief Secretary were Mandip Singh Brar, Home Secretary; Amit Kumar, MCC Commissioner; Pardeep Kumar, Secretary Animal Husbandry-cum-Special Commissioner MCC; and other senior officials.
