On the occasion of the 187th death anniversary of Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee paid rich tributes by offering floral tributes at his statue located on Barakhamba Road. The ceremony was attended by DSGMC President Sardar Harmeet Singh Kalka, General Secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlon, committee members, and a large number of members of the Sikh sangat.
Addressing the gathering, Kalka said that the reign of Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh was founded on the principles of justice, religious tolerance, and the welfare of all. He said that during his nearly 40-year rule, Maharaja Ranjit Singh did not award the death penalty to anyone, setting a unique example of humanity and compassion that continues to be admired across the world.
He further said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh captured Lahore at the age of just 19 and established the Sikh Empire at the age of 20, earning a unique place in history. His empire extended from Punjab to the Khyber Pass, and through his foresight, bravery, and efficient administration, he built a strong and prosperous state.
Kalka said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh treated all religions with equal respect. Besides adorning Sri Harmandar Sahib with gold, he also contributed to the upkeep of other religious shrines, including the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, reflecting his deep commitment to religious harmony, tolerance, and humanity.
He also said that Maharaja Ranjit Singh modernized and strengthened his army by inducting foreign military experts and creating a disciplined fighting force. It was because of this military strength, he added, that despite conquering much of India, the British had to wait a long time before advancing into Punjab.
According to Kalka Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s life and exemplary governance continue to inspire rulers and societies alike. Following his ideals, he said, would be the truest tribute to the great Sikh ruler.
