Governor Urges United Effort To Curb Drug Abuse In Himachal

Shimla, Dec 8

Emphasising the need for a united and compassionate fight against narcotics, the Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla today inaugurated a state-level workshop titled War on Drugs – Chitte Par Chot, organised by the ‘Sanjeevani’ Group of NGOs in Himachal Pradesh.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor called for a coordinated strategy involving law enforcement, community awareness, and rehabilitation. He said that the campaign against drugs requires both strict police action and sensitivity towards victims. Alongside NGOs, he urged active participation from religious institutions to break the international drug network affecting the state.

He commended the efforts of the State Government in tackling the menace and appreciated the political consensus shown by both ruling and opposition parties in the Assembly, calling it a vital step toward saving the Devbhoomi from this crisis.

Describing Chitte Par Chot as a pledge rather than a campaign, the Governor lauded Sanjeevani for promoting awareness, research, capacity building, and policy advocacy. He noted that the initiative has provided a collaborative platform for NGOs to work with the government on prevention, counseling, and rehabilitation measures.

Stressing the importance of community participation, he urged society, media, youth groups, and religious bodies to raise a collective voice. He also highlighted that the fight against drugs begins at home, encouraging parents to remain attentive to their children’s behaviour and surroundings. Schools and colleges, he said, must conduct regular awareness programmes.

Calling for stringent action against drug traffickers while ensuring humane treatment for addicts, the Governor said hospitals and rehabilitation centres play a crucial role in recovery and reintegration. He added that with unified efforts from government agencies, panchayats, educational institutions, and social organizations, a drug-free Himachal is achievable.

The event also featured the leadership and members of the Sanjeevani Group of NGOs, which was formed in September 2025 and now comprises 17 organisations working across seven districts. The group aims to strengthen community-based approaches and broaden social engagement in the fight against substance abuse.

Secretary of Sanjeevani Group of NGOs, Naresh Sharma presented a vote of thanks. Advisor Sanjeevani Joginder Kanwar, Vice Presidents of Sanjeevani Nitin Vyas and Dr. Joginder Saklani, DIG Police Digvijay Negi, Senior Advocate Piyush Verma, O.P. Sharma and Dr. Nidhi Sharma were also present as experts along with other prominent people.
