Himachal Slashes Electricity Rates by 1 Paisa/Unit from April 1

The Himachal Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (HPERC) issued a new tariff order on Wednesday, March 25, for the financial year 2026-27, providing major relief to millions of consumers in the state. According to the commission’s decision, electricity rates will be reduced by 01 paisa per unit across the entire state effective from April 1, 2026. This relief will apply to domestic consumers as well as all categories including industrial, agricultural, and commercial sectors.

The commission has reduced the average cost of electricity supply from Rs 6.76 rupees to Rs 6.75 per unit. However, domestic category consumers in Himachal Pradesh will continue to receive 125 units of electricity free of cost. There was earlier discussion about imposing conditions on this. Additionally, the government has announced in the budget that one lakh poor consumers will not have to pay bills up to 300 units.

The Regulatory Commission has estimated the Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR) of Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) at 8636.16 crore rupees for the financial year 2026-27, compared to 8403.25 crore rupees last year.

Under the new rates, for the domestic sector, the charge for ‘lifelineconsumers (0-60 units) is set at Rs 4.71, for general domestic consumers (0-125 units) at Rs 5.44 per unit, and for consumption above 126 units at 5.89 rupees per unit. In the commercial sector, the new rate for connections up to 20 kVA is 6.39 rupees, and for larger establishments 6.11 rupees per unit, while for agricultural consumers the rate is set at 5.03 rupees. Providing relief to the industrial sector as well, the rate for small industries is set at 5.71 rupees and for medium industries at 5.60 rupees per unit. No changes have been made in fixed demand charges, so consumers will not face any additional burden.
