New Delhi, January 27, 2026:
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday met Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and sought the Centre’s support for the expansion of Kangra airport, besides pushing for improved air connectivity to Himachal Pradesh’s hill destinations.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister urged the Union Ministry to provide special central assistance (grant) for the Kangra airport expansion project and to fast-track the resolution of pending issues. He said Kangra district holds immense tourism potential and the state government is implementing several initiatives to attract a higher inflow of domestic and international tourists.
Emphasising operational challenges in hill airports, CM Sukhu requested the introduction of special Visual Flight Rules (VFR) to reduce the minimum visibility requirement from the existing 5 km to 2.5 km. He said this move would help ensure regular flight operations during reduced visibility conditions and improve reliability for passengers.
The Chief Minister also raised the issue of airport security arrangements and suggested that Kullu and Shimla airports be handed over to the State Police instead of CISF, citing limited flight operations and passenger volume. He said the step would significantly reduce the financial burden on the state without compromising security.
Seeking better utilisation of existing infrastructure, CM Sukhu requested an extension of flight operation hours at Shimla airport up to 4 pm, which would allow more aircraft movements and improve connectivity for residents and tourists alike.
To strengthen regional air travel, the Chief Minister also pressed for an increase in the frequency of Chandigarh–Shimla–Chandigarh flights and urged early approval of four proposed heliports, which would enhance last-mile connectivity to remote and tourist areas of the state.
Responding positively, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu directed officials to hold a joint meeting with the state government and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the expansion of Kangra airport. He assured full cooperation and support from the Centre for strengthening aviation infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh.
Chief Minister’s Principal Advisor Ram Subhag Singh was also present during the meeting.
