Ludhiana, June 6
Panic gripped passengers after a special train travelling from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra developed a technical fault at Ludhiana Railway Station on Saturday morning.
According to railway officials, a loud noise was heard from the train just before it was scheduled to leave the station. The sound came after a coupler connecting two coaches failed, causing the coaches to separate and damaging the washroom section of the S-2 sleeper coach. The train involved was the New Delhi–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Special (04081), which had departed from New Delhi earlier in the day.
The sudden noise led some passengers to fear that an explosion had occurred, creating panic for a brief time. However, officials confirmed that no one was near the damaged area when the incident took place, and no injuries were reported. Soon after the incident, teams from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and local police reached the station and secured the area. Railway engineers also began inspecting the damaged coach.
Ludhiana ADCP Sameer Verma said the incident occurred around 9 a.m. and was caused by a technical fault in the S-2 coach. During the investigation, officials found that the damage appeared to have been caused by a welding failure. Engineers stated that the coach was old and a weakened weld near the washroom section gave way, resulting in the breakage. Railway authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. Repair work is underway, and the train will resume its journey after necessary safety checks are completed.
