Panaji, Dec 7
A late-night party turned into tragedy when a massive fire broke out at the ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’ nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, shortly after midnight on Sunday.
The blaze killed 25 people and left six others injured. Officials said most victims died due to suffocation after they were trapped on the ground floor of the club and could not escape. The nightclub is located about 25 km from the state capital Panaji.
A village official claimed the building was constructed without proper permission. A demolition notice had been issued earlier, but its implementation was stayed by a higher authority.
Meanwhile, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has promised strict action against officials who allowed the nightclub to operate despite violations of safety norms.
