Amritsar Prepares for Three-Day Pulse Polio Drive

AMRITSAR, India — Local authorities finalized preparations on Monday for an upcoming three-day Pulse Polio vaccination drive. The campaign aims to immunize nearly 290,000 children across the district later this month.

The initiative, scheduled for June 28, 29, and 30, 2026, is organized by the health department with strategic support from the World Health Organization (WHO).

A Multi-Department Coalition

At a District Task Force meeting held at the District Administrative Complex, officials emphasized that maintaining India’s polio-free status requires collective civic action. The meeting was organized under the direction of Deputy Commissioner Dalwinderjit Singh. It was chaired by District Revenue Officer Mankirat Singh Randhawa and led by Civil Surgeon Dr. Rashmi Vij.

“Safeguarding children against polio is not solely the responsibility of the Health Department,” Dr. Vij said during the meeting. She added that continuous periodic campaigns are vital to ensure children remain protected from the incurable disease.

To ensure complete coverage, the health department is coordinating with several public sectors, including:

  • Education and Nursing: Local schools and nursing colleges.
  • Infrastructure and Safety: The Power Department, Punjab Roadways, and local police.
  • Community Leadership: Panchayati Raj Institutions and the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

Logistics and Targets

The Health Department has finalized all logistical arrangements to target approximately 287,498 children from birth up to five years of age.

To execute the three-day round, the district will deploy:

  • 1,193 vaccination booths established across urban and rural sectors.
  • 2,386 specialized teams conducting field and booth distributions.
  • 255 supervisors to monitor the campaign’s execution and data collection.

Dr. Vij directed all Senior Medical Officers and Urban Medical Officers to ensure strict adherence to the deployment plan so that no eligible child misses the two life-saving vaccine drops.

Key medical officials attending the planning session included BCG Officer Dr. Manmeet Kaur, Dr. Vineet Kaur, and District Medical Education and Information Officer Amardeep Singh.
