SHIMLA, India | 5 Feb 2026— The Government of Himachal Pradesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s Geotropy India Pvt. Ltd. on Thursday, marking a pivotal step in the state’s transition toward becoming a fully “Green Energy State with Geothermal Energy.”
The agreement, witnessed by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the Ambassador of Iceland to India, Benedikt Hoskuldsson, aims to explore the state’s untapped geothermal potential using specialized technology from the North Atlantic nation.
A Round-the-Clock Green Solution with Geothermal Energy
Unlike solar or wind power, which are intermittent, geothermal energy provides a stable, “baseload” power supply. Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that this reliability is critical for reducing the state’s dependence on conventional, carbon-heavy energy sources.
Partnership and Implementation
The MoU was formally executed by D.P. Gupta, Chief Engineer of the Directorate of Energy, and Tomos Otto Hansson, Chairperson of Iceland-based GEOTROPY ehf. Key highlights of the partnership include:
- Immediate Exploration: The Chief Minister directed the firm to commence geological surveys and exploration work without delay.
- No Fiscal Burden: The exploration phase will be conducted at no financial cost to the state exchequer.
- International Expertise: The collaboration leverages Iceland’s global leadership in geothermal technology to identify high-potential sites across the Himalayan terrain.
Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi and senior officials from the Directorate of Energy were also present, signaling a multi-departmental push for the project’s success.
