Strict Action Against Polluters: Punjab Govt Intensifies Drive To Clean Buddha Dariya

Ludhiana, November 29

The Punjab government has stepped up its campaign to clean the heavily polluted Buddha Dariya, with Local Bodies Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal conducting a high-level review of the Buddha Dariya Rejuvenation Project at the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Jamalpur on Saturday.

During the meeting, the minister and MP issued strict directions to officials of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board (PWSSB) and the Municipal Corporation, warning that negligence in the proper functioning of sewage and effluent treatment plants (STPs and ETPs) would invite tough departmental action.

Calling water pollution a grave threat to Ludhiana’s environment and public health, Dr. Ravjot Singh and MP Seechewal directed the civic body and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to halt the dumping of cow dung and untreated industrial waste into the Buddha Dariya. They emphasized that violators must face immediate punishment to deter further pollution.

The meeting was attended by MLAs Ashok Prashar Pappi and Daljit Singh Bhola Grewal, Mayor Principal Inderjit Kaur, MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, ADCP Jashandeep Singh Gill, SDM Jasleen Bhullar, SE Ekjot Singh, and PWSSB Executive Engineer Balraj Singh, among other officials.

Reaffirming the state government’s commitment, Dr. Ravjot Singh noted that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has made the river’s rejuvenation a priority project. “Regular field monitoring is being carried out, and timelines have been fixed for each task. No laxity will be tolerated,” he said.

Earlier, the minister and MP Seechewal also visited the Sangat Ghat developed by Seechewal along the Buddha Dariya and lauded his sustained efforts in reducing the river’s pollution levels.

Later, MLAs Grewal and Prashar along with MC Commissioner Dachalwal held talks with dairy owners at Tajpur Road Dairy Complex, urging them to cooperate in stopping the discharge of cow dung into the river. They warned that continued violations would attract strict punitive measures.
