SRI MUKTSAR SAHIB, India, June 23 — Punjab has capped annual private school fee increases at 5 percent and will launch online access to board exam answer sheets, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced on Tuesday.

The policy updates were shared during the state’s “Bright Minds Punjab 2026” ceremony, where Bains and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Affairs In-charge Manish Sisodia felicitated more than 1,050 students who scored 85 percent or higher in their Class 12 examinations.

The state government has approved an ordinance amending the Punjab Regulation of Fees of Unaided Educational Institutions Act to enforce the 5 percent limit on annual fee hikes. The ordinance is currently awaiting the Punjab Governor’s final approval. Furthermore, the government will penalise schools that implemented unreasonable fee hikes over the past three years, requiring them to refund the excess collections to parents.

To improve administrative transparency, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will upload examination answer sheets online to grant students unrestricted access to their graded work. Bains noted that Punjab’s public school system recently secured the top spot nationwide in the federal government’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 and the NITI Aayog 2026 report, outranking Kerala.

Addressing the youth workforce, Bains stated that the current administration has distributed over 68,000 government jobs based strictly on merit. He also stressed the immediate necessity of introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) training into school curricula to prepare students for shifting employment landscapes.

During an open panel discussion with the high-achieving students and teachers, Sisodia emphasized that robust public education remains a primary driver of national growth.

The felicitation event was also attended by local lawmaker Jagdeep Singh Kaka Brar and Director of School Education (Secondary) S.S. Ball.
