Governments Deliver Public Welfare Works Through its employees only, Says Sarup Singla
Bathinda, June 19
Before coming to power in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party government led by Bhagwant Mann made tall promises of “change” and people-centric governance. However, the situation today is such that government employees are being forced to knock on the doors of courts and take to the streets to fight for their legitimate rights.
Expressing support for the employees, BJP leader and former MLA Sarup Chand Singla said that it is extremely unfortunate that employee unions are being compelled to fight legal battles as well as stage protests on the streets to secure their dearness allowance (DA) and other legitimate rights. He said that the recent baton charge on the agitating PSPCL linemen is the latest example of the government’s anti-employee mindset. The incident has raised serious questions over democratic rights and the right to peaceful protest.
Singla further said that, apart from this, government employees are being diverted from their primary duties and deployed for unnecessary surveys. In particular, women employees are being compelled to ask uncomfortable and personal questions during the anti-drug survey, causing them mental stress and social discomfort.
He said that the government should treat employees not as opponents but as the backbone of the administration. Instead of resorting to protests, baton charges and court battles, the government should adopt the path of dialogue and cooperation. Addressing the legitimate demands of employees at the earliest and restoring their confidence is the need of the hour.
Singla said that governments implement their public welfare policies through employees, and if the legitimate demands of these very employees are not heard, nothing could be more unfortunate than that.
