Veteran Congress leader Shivraj Patil, former Union Home Minister and Lok Sabha Speaker, passed away on December 12, 2025, at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra, at the age of 90 after a prolonged illness. The seven-time MP from Latur succumbed to age-related complications around 6:30 AM, marking the end of a distinguished career in public service spanning decades.
Patil shared a strong connection with Punjab and Chandigarh, serving as Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015. During his tenure, he guided the region through key administrative reforms, development projects, and efforts toward governance stability amid Punjab’s vibrant political landscape and Chandigarh’s urban challenges.
Known for his roles as Speaker of the 10th Lok Sabha (1991–1996) and Union Minister for Home, Defence, and Commerce, Patil was widely respected for his constitutional expertise and dignified approach. Tributes poured in from national leaders, who praised his cross-party acceptance and lifelong commitment to parliamentary democracy.
