Former Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor have already fled the electoral battlefield, says Kulwant Singh
Makes fervent appeal to voters to exercise their democratic right on May 26
Mohali May 16
In a sharp political attack ahead of the Mohali Municipal Corporation elections, MLA Kulwant Singh today said that former mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor-level leaders have “abandoned the electoral battlefield” by refusing to contest the elections, as they lack the courage to face the public.
Addressing mediapersons during a meeting held in support of Aam Aadmi Party candidate Anu Babbar from Ward No. 9 (Phase-5), Kulwant Singh said several former councillors have also withdrawn from the contest because the people had already rejected them politically. He alleged that these leaders spent their tenure indulging only in mudslinging and personal interests, while making no sincere efforts to resolve public grievances or work for the welfare of residents.
The MLA appealed to citizens to come out in large numbers and cast their votes on May 26, stressing that the opportunity to elect a representative of one’s choice comes only once in five years. He urged voters not to stay home on the pretext of rain, illness or weather conditions, warning that low voter participation would weaken democracy.
Reacting to allegations by opposition parties regarding ward delimitation, Kulwant Singh clarified that ward boundaries are determined according to population and not on the recommendations or wishes of political leaders.
Criticising the previous Congress-led municipal administration, he alleged that Mohali witnessed mounting garbage problems during the past five years. He said that during his tenure as Mayor, land had been approved for a dumping ground, but the subsequent Congress Mayor failed to act on the proposal or ensure its execution.
Kulwant Singh further claimed that the people of Punjab have distanced themselves from the Congress due to alleged corruption and “loot” during its rule. He said residents of Mohali are well aware of local Congress leaders and can no longer be misled by what he termed as false promises and misinformation.
Referring to recently concluded Panchayat, Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections, the MLA said no incidents of violence or coercion were reported anywhere, and asserted that the upcoming Municipal Corporation elections would also remain peaceful and fair. He maintained that every voter would be free to vote for the candidate of their choice without fear or pressure.
Among those present on the occasion were AAP Ward No. 9 candidate Anu Babbar, Kuldeep Singh Samana, Govind Mittal, Akbinder Singh Gosal, Gurjeet Singh Mattor, Jagir Singh, Rajneesh Sharma, Surinder Singh, Usha Sahi, Joginder Kaur Butter, Avtar Singh and Mohinder Singh.
