SHIMLA, India — Emergency officials in Himachal Pradesh issued an urgent public safety advisory on Saturday, warning residents of the “invisible” dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning as winter temperatures persist across the region.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) categorized the gas as a silent threat, noting that because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, it often goes undetected until victims are incapacitated.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Health officials stressed that early symptoms of exposure are often mistaken for the flu or general fatigue. Residents are urged to monitor for:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Dizziness or nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Confusion or blurred vision

“If you experience a headache or dizziness while indoors, move outside to fresh air and seek medical help immediately,” the SDMA statement said.

Safety Protocol and Support

The warning comes amid increased use of indoor heating elements, such as coal fires and gas heaters, which are primary sources of CO buildup in poorly ventilated spaces.

Authorities have released dedicated helplines for those requiring immediate assistance or reporting suspected leaks:

  • Disaster Helpline: 1070 or 1077
  • Alternate Contact: +91 94594 55841
  • Official Portal: hpsdma.nic.in

The advisory, supported by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), underscores a broader “Winter Safety” campaign aimed at reducing preventable fatalities during the peak cold months.
